Margaret L. Barkus

Margaret L. Barkus, 86, of Du Quoin, passed away at 12:45 A.M., Wednesday, January 1, 2003 at the Fair View Nursing Center in Du Quoin.
Margaret and her husband had resided in Dowell for several years where her husband served as mayor for twelve years. They then moved to California and Margaret returned to Du Quoin after her husband's death in 1982.
Margaret was a loving, giving and kind person. She was a homemaker and a member of the Old Du Quoin Baptist Church. She was active in the Senior Citizen and was a member of the Marshall Browning Hospital Auxiliary and the Du Quoin American Legion Auxiliary.
She was born May 15, 1916 at Alto Pass, IL the daughter of Harvey and Maude (Wright) Hickem.
She married Anthony Barkus on October 31, 1935 at Benton, IL, he preceded her in death March 10, 1982.
She was a loving mother to her daughters- Marilyn Jones and husband Jimmy of Ridgecrest, CA and Judith Cox and husband Paul of Scottsdale, AZ and a loving grandmother to her grandchildren- Alicia Whitson of Medford, OR and Shannon and Heather Cox of Scottsdale, AZ, loving great grandmother to Amber and Gavin Whitson of Medford, OR.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers and sisters- Ruth, Kenneth, Harry, Louise, Burnell, Paul and Marie.
Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 4, 2003 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Ted Clark officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the IOOF Cemetery at Du Quoin.
